"Just drink more water" is common advice for dry skin, and it isn't wrong — but it's incomplete. Skin hydration is a two-part system: water intake matters, but so does what's happening on the surface of your skin, and that second half is where most dryness actually gets solved.
Why water alone has limits
Your body prioritises water for essential functions — organs, blood volume, temperature regulation — long before it prioritises visible skin moisture. Once you're adequately hydrated, drinking significantly more water doesn't continue to meaningfully "plump up" skin the way skincare marketing sometimes implies.
The part most people skip: the skin barrier
Skin retains moisture using a barrier made of natural oils and lipids on its outer layer. When that barrier is damaged — from harsh soap, over-washing, dry weather, or air conditioning — water evaporates out of the skin far faster than the body can replace it, regardless of how much you drink.
Two different jobs: humectants vs. emollients
- Humectants (like aloe vera and glycerin) draw moisture into the skin's outer layer.
- Emollients and occlusives (oils, thicker creams) seal that moisture in and slow evaporation.
Using only one half of this pair is a common reason a moisturiser "isn't working" — a purely water-based product without something to seal it in can evaporate almost as fast as it's applied.
Everyday habits that matter more than water intake alone
- Apply moisturiser to slightly damp skin right after washing — this traps existing surface moisture rather than starting from dry skin.
- Avoid very hot water when washing your face or bathing, which strips natural oils faster than warm water.
- Reapply after sweating or swimming — both dry out the skin barrier more than people expect.
When dryness needs more than a routine change
Persistent dryness accompanied by redness, cracking, or itching that doesn't improve with consistent moisturising is worth having assessed by a dermatologist, as it may indicate an underlying skin condition rather than simple environmental dryness.
